What is Botox?

Botox has been widely used by the medical community for years to treat facial wrinkles. Essentially, it is the brand name for a toxin produced by the bacterium *Clostridium botulinum*, known as “botulinum toxin type A.

There are other FDA-approved brands, such as Dysport and Xeomin, but “Botox” is the term most commonly heard because it was the first injectable botulinum toxin.

It is a microbial exotoxin produced by *Clostridium botulinum*, known as botulinum toxin type A—or otherwise as botulinum toxin.

What are the indications for botulinum toxin type A?

Botulinum toxin type A has been used for over 30 years to treat individuals suffering from involuntary muscle disorders, cervical dystonia, strabismus, blepharospasm, and hemifacial spasm.

However, over the last 20 years, it has also been used for the non-surgical treatment of facial expression lines; its widespread popularity stems from the fact that it is a minimally invasive procedure that yields spectacular, immediate results. Specifically, botulinum toxin type A can correct:

The need for botulinum toxin type A treatment is related more to muscle activity than to age. However, the younger the individual, the more dramatic—yet natural—the results.

There are expressive individuals with strong muscles who require botulinum toxin type A as early as age 18–20, while others with less intense muscle activity may not develop expression lines until age 30–35.

However, it is true that starting treatment early acts as a preventive measure against the appearance of wrinkles. Nowadays, the use of small doses of botulinum toxin type A is increasingly common among young people who either have a hereditary predisposition or have begun to develop wrinkles due to hypertonic muscles. This method is also known as “baby” [Botox].

The average duration of the effect of botulinum toxin type A is approximately 4–6 months. After the third month, slight movement in the treated area may begin to appear.

As muscle activity gradually returns, lines and wrinkles start to reappear and require further treatment. Over time, however, these lines and wrinkles often appear less severe; consequently, the treatment also has a preventive effect.

With the initial treatments, the duration may be slightly shorter; however, studies have shown that with regular sessions, the results last longer—potentially up to 7 months.

There is no limit to the number of treatments, though the procedure typically needs to be repeated approximately 2–3 times a year.

Choosing a specialized plastic surgeon or dermatologist is crucial for achieving a successful outcome and avoiding complications.

The treatment involves injections of the medication tailored to the patient’s needs and following a discussion regarding the desired outcome. Given that botulinum toxin reduces the contractions of the muscles that move the skin, botulinum toxin type A must be injected into the correct anatomical area and at the appropriate dosages to achieve the best possible result.

The drug’s effects begin to appear within 2–5 days, while the final result is visible after 10–14 days.

Botulinum toxin type A is arguably the best non-surgical facial treatment, delivering undeniable results and leaving the face looking rested, rejuvenated, and smooth.

However, administration by practitioners lacking expertise in the area’s anatomy—or, worse yet, by non-medical personnel—can lead to complications such as a “frozen” look, asymmetry, and eyelid drooping (ptosis).

You may experience some temporary side effects after a Botox injection. These may include:

  • Bruising. This is the most common—though not particularly frequent—side effect, and it will soon subside.
  • Headache. This usually occurs within the first 24 to 48 hours.
  • Mild pain or swelling around the injection site.
  • Dry eyes or excessive tearing.
  • Flu-like symptoms or general malaise.
  • Drooping eyelid (ptosis).

This is very rare when performed by a qualified plastic surgeon or dermatologist, but it is the most serious complication. Fortunately, it is reversible once the effects of the medication wear off.

Pregnant or breastfeeding women and individuals with neurological disorders should not use Botox. Since this injectable treatment is not effective for all types of wrinkles, you should first consult a specialist plastic surgeon or dermatologist. Furthermore, it is worth noting that you should not use Botox if you are allergic to cow’s milk protein.
