What does the doctor say about Liposuction

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures worldwide, both among women and men.

Thanks to modern and advanced medical techniques, we are able to achieve excellent aesthetic results with the highest degree of safety.

Through liposuction surgery, the following can be achieved:

  • Removal of excess fat tissue from specific areas of the body
  • Reshaping of targeted body areas
  • Enhancement of body curves and natural proportions

What Does Liposuction Offer?

Liposuction is the guaranteed solution for those who wish to permanently eliminate excess fat, improve their body shape, and sculpt their silhouette.

Beyond the impressive physical results, liposuction also offers significant psychological benefits, as it helps you:

  • Regain lost self-confidence
  • Reconnect with and love your body again
  • Feel comfortable and beautiful in your own skin, without the need to hide
  • Experience immediate rejuvenation by removing unwanted fat
  • Enhance your social and sexual life
  • See externally the same positive change you feel internally

Which Areas of the Body Can Liposuction Treat?

Liposuction is an ideal technique for addressing localized fat deposits in areas such as:

  • Thighs (thigh liposuction)
  • Buttocks (buttock liposuction)
  • Inner knees
  • Calves and ankles
  • Abdomen and waist
  • Upper arms
  • Chest area
  • Back
  • Chin and neck

Additionally, liposuction can sometimes be used to reduce breast size or treat gynecomastia.

When you gain weight, fat cells increase in size and volume. Liposuction, in turn, reduces the number of fat cells in a specific area.

The amount of fat removed depends on both the quantity of fat present and the skin’s elasticity. Results are generally permanent, provided that body weight remains stable.

It should be noted that liposuction does not improve cellulite or other irregularities on the skin surface, nor does it remove stretch marks.

Who Is a Suitable Candidate for Liposuction?

You may be a good candidate for liposuction if you are in good overall health. Contraindications include:

  • Coronary artery disease
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Weak immune system
  • Patients on anticoagulant therapy

Ideal candidates are people who:

  • Are not obese
  • Have good skin elasticity and muscle tone
  • Have no medical conditions that delay healing and recovery
  • Have stubborn localized fat deposits that do not respond to diet and exercise

What Is the Purpose of Liposuction?

Liposuction aims to improve both the appearance and contour of specific areas of the body.

It is important to emphasize that liposuction is not a weight-loss method, nor is it a substitute for a proper exercise and diet program.

Significant or rapid weight fluctuations after the procedure can negatively affect the outcome.

Therefore, if you plan to lose a substantial amount of weight, it is best to postpone liposuction until your weight has stabilized.

What Happens During the Consultation?

During your consultation with Dr. Karmiris, the following will be discussed:

  • Your concerns regarding your appearance
  • Whether liposuction is the right treatment for you
  • Your full medical history (e.g., medications, vitamins, herbal supplements, allergies, and previous surgeries)
  • Your smoking habits, if any

Dr. Karmiris will then:

  • Assess your general health condition and any potential risk factors
  • Examine and take precise measurements of the areas with excess fat
  • Evaluate your skin quality
  • Take preoperative photographs
  • Inform you of the most suitable surgical options for your case
  • Explain expected results, potential risks, and possible complications
  • Answer all your questions, including those regarding anesthesia

What Happens Before Surgery?

Before the procedure, you will undergo the necessary preoperative examinations.

Dr. Karmiris will address any questions you may have about the preparation process and provide detailed instructions.

What Happens During Surgery?

Liposuction is performed under general anesthesia or sedation, depending on the number and size of the areas to be treated.

During the procedure, 2–3 small incisions of about 5 mm are made. These are placed in natural skin folds and typically become nearly invisible within 6–12 months.

First, a diluted solution containing a local anesthetic and a vasoconstrictor is injected to reduce bleeding and minimize postoperative pain.

Next, a special cannula is inserted under the skin, and with controlled movements, excess fat is removed through vacuum suction.

Finally, the small incisions are closed with absorbable sutures.

What Happens After Surgery?

Immediately after liposuction, bandages or dressings will be applied to the incisions. These will soon be reduced. No drains are used in liposuction.

During recovery, you will need to wear a compression garment, band, or corset—depending on the treated area—for the first postoperative weeks. This helps minimize swelling and speeds up skin readjustment.

You can return home the same day.

Dr. Karmiris will provide you with specific instructions regarding wound care, prescribed medications, and the timing of follow-up appointments.

Safety Information and Possible Complications

Liposuction is generally a safe, painless, and highly effective procedure. However, as with any surgery, there are potential risks and complications. Patients should be fully informed about these.

The most important potential complications include:

  • Bleeding, hematoma, or bruising
  • Infection
  • Fat necrosis
  • Poor healing of incisions
  • Asymmetry or irregular body contour
  • Temporary numbness in the treated area
  • General anesthesia risks (e.g., deep vein thrombosis, cardiac or pulmonary complications)

Results of Liposuction

Following liposuction, you will notice a remarkable improvement in both body shape and symmetry.

The treated areas will appear noticeably slimmer and better contoured.

Beyond the visible aesthetic improvement, liposuction also strengthens psychological well-being and boosts self-confidence.

Can Liposuction Be Combined With Other Procedures?

Yes. Liposuction is often used as a complementary technique in other surgeries. For example, in most tummy tucks, liposuction is applied to the flanks to refine the waistline.

It can also be combined with arm lifts, facelifts, or thigh lifts.
