What is Breast Lift & Augmentation?

Breast lift (mastopexy) along with breast augmentation is a combined surgical procedure used to correct sagging breasts (ptosis) and also increase their volume, usually with implants, in a single operation. This approach helps restore a youthful, firm, and more lifted breast appearance.

Indications / When is it recommended?

This combined procedure is suitable for women who:
– Have sagging breasts after pregnancy, weight fluctuation, or aging
– Have lost breast volume (e.g., after breastfeeding)
– Want both a lift in shape/position and increase in size
– Seek better symmetry and proportion

How is the procedure done?

– Incisions are made depending on the degree of sagging and the amount of lift needed (e.g. around the areola, vertical, or inverted T).
– The breast tissue is reshaped and lifted to a higher position on the chest wall.
– An implant is inserted (above or below the muscle, depending on anatomical considerations) to add volume and projection.
– The skin is redraped and excess skin is removed, and incisions are closed.

Surgical planning & considerations

– The surgeon assesses skin quality, degree of sagging, existing breast tissue, symmetry, and chest dimensions.
– The size and type of implant are chosen to suit the patient’s anatomy and aesthetic goals.
– The combined technique must balance lift and implant placement to achieve a stable, natural, and lasting result.

Recovery & care

– Initial swelling and bruising are expected.
– A supportive bra is typically worn for several weeks.
– Return to light daily activities is possible after some days; more strenuous activities delayed for weeks.
– The surgeon gives precise instructions on wound care, medications, follow‑up visits.

Risks and possible complications

Similar to individual breast lift or augmentation surgeries, risks may include:
– Bleeding / hematoma
– Infection
– Poor wound healing / scarring
– Changes in nipple or breast sensation (temporary or permanent)
– Implant-related issues (capsular contracture, rupture, displacement)
– Asymmetry or imbalance
– Risks associated with anesthesia

Duration of result & future pregnancies

– The result is considered long‑lasting, but aging, gravity, weight fluctuations may affect shape over time.
– If the patient becomes pregnant after the procedure, changes to the breast (size, shape) can impact the aesthetic outcome, though no major medical risk is typically expected.
